When you want to replace your shower unit with the new one, it must be started from the base up.  Why? It is because not the entire shower floor is waterproof. A ceramic tile may be look great and waterproof, but there are some possibilities of tile or grout damage which will makes the cement mortar under the tile saturated with the water. Even sometimes, the water infiltration and shower liners under the mortar will cause some crack to the tiles and holes to the grout lines. To help people with this problem, there are some flexible waterproof liners that made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or CPE (chlorinated polyethylene).

These flexible liners can be found at plumbing wholesale stores or any ceramic tile shops. The flexible liners were made for prevent any water and being resistant to any chemical form in a home. These flexible liners also become a nightmare and an angel in the same time because it never deteriorates.

When you want to install the shower pan, there are some simple steps that you can do based on some other experiences or many websites that you can found. Here, we will talk about the simple steps to finish the shower pan by yourself.

The first thing to do is to mortar the pre-slope. The best time to do this is on the daytime because you will have to wait until the grout set. You can let it to set for about 24 hours. Anyway, if you are really made the entire shower from the beginning, you have to make a hole for the drain assembly. After that, you can move on to disassemble the drain lip above the grout that has been set. So it will be easier to install the shower pan liner there.

After those steps, you can start to install the PVC shower pan liner. When you do this, make sure that the grout has already set and the drain lip has been removed. Use a little bit more of the liner than the width of the floor because there are some little parts of the wall that we will covered too. After that, you can simply making the corners of the shower pan liner, and simply tack or stapler it, so it will cover the corner and a little parts of the wall too.

After making the corner, you can simply cut and lay over the curb, so the unused part of the shower pan liner will be removed. After you finished it, you can make a special liner folded over curb for the outside corner. It has to be made in order to protect the outside corner and prevents some damage to the other part. After all of the corner installed, you can start to make a hole for the drain by cutting the shower pan liner. When it’s done, you can caulk lower drain flange and its upper flange after. Then, just simply insert the strainer.

After you done with all of these steps, you can add a lath over the corner piece, so there wont be any damage to it when someone step on it. After that, the shower pan is done, and it is ready for the mud.
